Book Description:

Abraham Lincoln delivered his First Inaugural Address on March 4, 1861, at a moment of extreme national crisis as seven Southern states had already seceded from the Union. In his speech, Lincoln argued that the Union was perpetual and that secession was legally void and revolutionary. He sought to reassure the South that he had no intention of interfering with slavery where it already existed, but he stood firm on his duty to protect federal property. Ending with an eloquent plea for peace, he famously invoked the 'mystic chords of memory' and the 'better angels of our nature,' hoping to prevent the impending outbreak of the Civil War.
